What’s it been like to start my own business? One year on…

I thought it a good time to reflect on how Harmony Accounting is growing, how it's been to balance a portfolio career and whether my reality is what I'd hoped when I set about leaving the comfort of the 9 to 5.

I was a bit daunted over a year ago, when I was considering taking the leap of starting up in business: Growing a client base, designing my business model, launching a website and applying for my practising certificate, tax agent registration and indemnity insurance were amongst many administrative and technical hurdles ahead. But I hoped it would all be worth it for the flexibility and autonomy that would come with running my own business.

Looking back, I’d say the best bit about the job has definitely been growing a strong network of performers and musicians and meeting such fabulous and interesting people. From West End singers to African Drummers, DJs, Organists, Opera Singers, Composers, Actors, Conductors, Jazzers, Designers, Directors, Orchestral players, Choirs, Pianists, Film makers and social media influencers… I had no idea that this job would so quickly introduce me to such a fascinating and varied bunch working all over the world. Here's some of the feedback I've had so far:

‘It's made a massive difference for me’

‘Wow, well that's better than I was expecting!

‘It’s been a super valuable experience and I’m looking forward to working with you and getting more of your expertise as time goes on!’

‘Thanks for being patient with all my questions, and thorough with your accounting’

‘Thank god for accountants!’

The last one was a bit much, if I'm honest, but I'll take it :)

I’ve realised in Harmony Accounting’s first year how much I enjoy working a portfolio and balancing two complementary careers. Being my own boss and able to set my schedule has also enabled me to do a lot more performing which was definitely one of my key goals when I embarked on this career change. My own singing has allowed me to meet new colleagues on a regular basis, and being able to also help them save money and sort out their accounting and tax obligations has been really rewarding.

So I’d say my reality is pretty close to where I wanted to be, one year on, with much more to look forward to in the coming years. If I had to give three bits of advice for anyone thinking of embarking on a similar path, I would say,

  • Grow a professional network. No problem needs to be faced alone!

  • Prioritise your wellbeing amongst the busy-ness. Sustainability is key.

  • Make sure you're making the most of your deductions, allowances and reliefs when dealing with your tax and accounting obligations - and if you need any help with that then do be in touch for a free consultation
